Synopsis/Plot
Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner is a 1967 American comedy-drama film starring Spencer Tracy, Sidney Poitier and Katharine Hepburn. It tells the story of a couple whose daughter brings home her African-American fiancé to meet her parents. The parents must grapple with their own views and attitudes about race and interracial marriage in the face of their daughter’s wishes.
The film opens with Christina Drayton (Katharine Hepburn) and her husband Matt (Spencer Tracy) discussing their daughter Joanna’s (Katharine Houghton) upcoming wedding. Joanna has just returned from Hawaii with her fiancé John Prentice (Sidney Poitier), a successful black doctor. Christina and Matt are surprised and concerned to learn that their daughter has fallen in love with a black man, but they are also proud of her for standing up for her own beliefs.
Despite their initial shock, Christina and Matt agree to meet John and give him a chance. They invite him to dinner at their home, where they can get to know him and decide if they approve of the relationship.
