Synopsis/Plot
Guarding Tess is a 1994 comedy-drama starring Shirley MacLaine and Nicolas Cage. The story follows Doug Chesnic (Cage), a former Secret Service agent who is assigned to guard the cantankerous former First Lady, Tess Carlisle (MacLaine). Tess is a strong-willed woman who has no patience for Doug’s attempts to protect her. Despite their differences, the two form an unlikely bond as Doug begins to understand Tess’s loneliness and vulnerability.
The film follows Doug as he learns to respect Tess and protect her from the various threats she faces, including an attempted kidnapping by a former employee. Along the way, Doug also discovers a few secrets of Tess’s past, including her involvement in a scandalous affair with a former president.
At the same time, Doug and Tess also develop a friendship that transcends their differences. As Doug gets to know Tess better, he begins to understand her need for independence and respect. In the end, Doug is able to protect Tess from her enemies and help her find the peace and happiness she deserves.
