Synopsis/Plot
Great Expectations is a classic coming-of-age tale set in Victorian England. The story follows Pip, an orphan boy living with his sister and her husband Joe, a blacksmith. Pip’s life changes dramatically when he meets a mysterious benefactor who provides him with a large inheritance, allowing him to move to London and pursue a life of wealth and respectability.
Pip is soon introduced to the upper classes of society, and finds himself falling in love with the beautiful Estella, who is being groomed by the mysterious Miss Havisham, a jilted bride who lives in a decaying mansion. Despite Estella’s coldness towards him, Pip continues to pursue her.
Meanwhile, Pip is haunted by the identity of his mysterious benefactor, and gradually discovers that it is the escaped convict, Magwitch, whom he had helped as a child. Magwitch is soon recaptured and Pip is wracked with guilt, feeling responsible for his fate.
