Synopsis – What to Expect from “Gosford Park”
Gosford Park is a 2001 British mystery film directed by Robert Altman and written by Julian Fellowes. The film is set in 1932 at Gosford Park, an English country house, and follows an eclectic group of guests and servants who assemble for a weekend shooting party.
The weekend is hosted by William McCordle (Michael Gambon), a wealthy industrialist, and his wife Sylvia (Kristin Scott Thomas). Among the guests are Sir William’s cousin, Lady Sylvia’s sister, Lady Constance Trentham (Maggie Smith), and her daughter Isobel (Camilla Rutherford). The guests are also accompanied by their respective servants, including the wise-cracking butler Jennings (Alan Bates), the housekeeper Mrs. Wilson (Helen Mirren), and the McCordles’ valet Robert Parks (Clive Owen).
The weekend starts off as a typical upper-class gathering, with the guests and servants exchanging pleasantries and gossiping about one another. But the mood turns sour when one of the guests, Sir William’s business partner Charles (Charles Dance), is found murdered in his bedroom.
The police arrive and begin to investigate the murder, and as they do, the guests and servants alike begin to reveal secrets and lies that could be related to the crime. As the investigation progresses, it becomes clear that each of the guests and servants has something to hide, and that the murderer may be closer than they think
