Gods and Monsters is a 1998 British-American drama film directed and written by Bill Condon, based on the life of film director James Whale. The film stars Ian McKellen as Whale, Brendan Fraser as his young gardener, and Lynn Redgrave as Whale’s housekeeper.

One day, Whale hires a young, handsome gardener named Clayton Boone to help him with his garden. Although Boone is initially wary of Whale, the two soon become friends. Boone helps Whale with his garden and listens to his stories, which include memories of his time in World War I and his relationship with his wife.
Meanwhile, Whale’s housekeeper, Hanna, is concerned about his health and tries to persuade him to go to the doctor. Whale refuses, but eventually agrees to take medication. However, his health continues to deteriorate and he becomes increasingly dependent on Boone.
