Synopsis/Plot
Glory is a 1989 American war drama film directed by Edward Zwick about the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, the Union Army’s first African-American regiment in the American Civil War. The film stars Matthew Broderick as Colonel Robert Gould Shaw, the regiment’s commanding officer, and Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes, and Morgan Freeman as fictional members of the regiment.
The film follows Shaw and his regiment as they prepare for battle, fight for their freedom, and ultimately lead an attack on Fort Wagner, a Confederate stronghold. Along the way, Shaw and his men battle racial prejudice and discrimination, both from within the Union Army and from the Confederate forces they face in battle.
The film also highlights the courage and determination of those who fought in the Civil War, as well as the strength of the bonds formed between the men of the 54th Massachusetts. The film is a powerful and moving tribute to the bravery of the African-American soldiers who fought for their freedom, and it is widely considered to be one of the best films about the Civil War.
