Synopsis/Plot
Gladiator is a 2000 historical epic film directed by Ridley Scott and starring Russell Crowe. The film tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius, a Roman general who is betrayed by the emperor’s son and is forced into slavery. Maximus rises through the ranks of the gladiatorial arena to avenge the murder of his family and his emperor.
The film opens with Maximus, a victorious general in the Roman army, returning home from battle. He is greeted by the Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, who has decided to make Maximus his heir instead of his own son, Commodus. After the death of the Emperor, Commodus seizes the throne and orders the death of Maximus and his family. Maximus is able to escape and is sold into slavery as a gladiator.
Maximus is taken to the gladiator school of Proximo, where he is trained to fight in the arena. He quickly rises through the ranks and becomes a fan favorite, gaining the nickname “The Spaniard”. Maximus eventually faces Commodus in the arena, but spares his life. Commodus then arranges for Maximus to fight in a coliseum in Rome, where he is reunited
