Synopsis – What to Expect from “Gimme Shelter”
Gimme Shelter is a 1970 American documentary film directed by Albert and David Maysles and Charlotte Zwerin chronicling the last months of The Rolling Stones’ 1969 US tour which culminated in the disastrous Altamont Free Concert.
The film follows the Rolling Stones on their 1969 tour, focusing on the band’s preparations for their free concert at the Altamont Speedway in northern California on December 6, 1969. The film also captures the events leading up to and including the concert, which was marred by violence, including the murder of Meredith Hunter by Hells Angels members who had been hired to provide security.
The film begins with the band’s arrival in San Francisco on December 3, 1969, where they are greeted by a large and enthusiastic crowd. As the tour progresses, the band’s entourage grows and the number of fans who follow them increases. The band is shown performing a number of their hits, including “Gimme Shelter” and “Sympathy for the Devil”.
The film then moves to the Altamont Speedway, where the free concert is to take place. As the crowd grows, the security provided by the Hells Angels deteriorates and the atmosphere becomes increasingly chaotic and violent. During the Rolling Stones’ performance of “Sympathy for the Devil”, a fight breaks out near the stage and Meredith Hunter is stabbed and killed by a Hells Angel.
