Synopsis – What to Expect from “Gilda”
Gilda is a 1946 American film noir directed by Charles Vidor and starring Rita Hayworth in her signature role as the femme fatale and Glenn Ford as a young thug. The film is known for its costume design, especially the iconic black satin gown Hayworth wears in the movie.
The film follows Johnny Farrell (Ford), a small-time gambler who has just arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He soon finds himself working for a powerful casino owner, Ballin Mundson (George Macready). Johnny quickly rises up the ranks and soon finds himself in a love triangle with Ballin and his beautiful wife, Gilda (Hayworth). Gilda and Johnny had a brief affair in the past, and their chemistry is still strong.
Ballin is suspicious of Johnny and Gilda’s relationship and begins to suspect Gilda of infidelity. He decides to test their loyalty by sending Johnny on a business trip to the United States. Gilda is left alone in Buenos Aires and soon begins to fall in love with her husband’s best friend, a shady character named Obregon (Joseph Calleia).
When Johnny returns from his trip, he discovers that Ballin has become increasingly jealous and paranoid. He suspects Gilda and Obregon of having an affair and is determined to find out the truth. Gilda and Johnny must now fight to protect their love and survive Ballin’s wrath.
