Synopsis/Plot
Ghostbusters is a 1984 American supernatural comedy film directed and produced by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The film stars Bill Murray, Aykroyd, and Ramis as three eccentric parapsychologists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis co-star as a client and her neighbor, and Ernie Hudson as the Ghostbusters’ first recruit.
The film follows the Ghostbusters as they battle to save New York City from a supernatural plague unleashed by a rogue librarian, played by Weaver. The Ghostbusters use their proton packs to combat a variety of ghosts, including the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, a giant, lumbering creature created from a child’s imagination.
The film was a critical and commercial success, earning more than $295 million at the box office in the United States and more than $238 million worldwide. It was nominated for two Academy Awards and spawned a sequel, Ghostbusters II, released in 1989. The film also spawned an animated television series, The Real Ghostbusters, which ran from 1986 to 1991, and a reboot film, also titled Ghostbusters, released in 2016.
