Synopsis – What to Expect from “Get Real”
Get Real is a 1998 British comedy-drama film directed by Simon Shore. It follows the story of a 16-year-old British schoolboy named Steven Carter (Ben Silverstone), who is struggling to come to terms with his homosexuality.
The film begins with Steven attending a private school in England. He is a bright student, but is constantly bullied by his classmates for being different. He is also struggling to come to terms with his sexuality, as he is attracted to another boy at school.
One day, Steven meets a new student named John Dixon (Brad Gorton), who is openly gay and unafraid to be himself. John introduces Steven to the world of gay nightlife and the two become close friends. Steven gradually begins to accept his sexuality and finds himself falling for John.
However, Steven’s father (John Woodvine) is not accepting of his son’s sexuality and tries to force him to be “normal”. This leads to a strained relationship between Steven and his father.
Meanwhile, Steven’s mother (Charlotte Coleman) is more supportive and encourages Steven to be himself. She even helps him to come out to his classmates and to his father.
Eventually, Steven and John’s relationship is accepted by both their families and the two are able to be together. The film ends with Steven and John embracing in a passionate kiss.
