Synopsis/Plot
Gaslight is a 1944 psychological thriller directed by George Cukor and starring Ingrid Bergman, Charles Boyer, and Joseph Cotten. It tells the story of a young woman, Paula (Bergman), who is married to a much older man, Gregory (Boyer). As the couple moves into a new home, strange events begin to occur. Gregory becomes increasingly controlling and emotionally abusive, and it soon becomes apparent that he is attempting to drive Paula insane. He manipulates her, accusing her of being delusional and imagining things, and even gaslights her by dimming the lights in the house and then denying it. As Paula’s mental state deteriorates, she begins to suspect that Gregory is hiding a dark secret and that he is trying to drive her insane so he can gain access to her family’s fortune. The film is a suspenseful and psychological exploration of the power of manipulation and the strength of the human spirit.
