Synopsis/Plot
Gangs of New York is a 2002 American epic crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Jay Cocks, Steven Zaillian, and Kenneth Lonergan. Set in the Five Points district of New York City in the mid-19th century, the film follows the story of Amsterdam Vallon, a young man who returns to the area after a long absence to avenge his father’s death at the hands of Bill the Butcher, the local crime boss.
The film is set in the turbulent years of the early 1860s, when the city was divided by the rivalry between the Irish immigrants of the Five Points and the “native” Americans. The Irish are led by Bill the Butcher, a ruthless and powerful figure who has established himself as the leader of the neighborhood. Amsterdam, the son of an Irish immigrant, returns to the Five Points after a long absence to avenge his father’s death at the hands of Bill. He finds himself in the middle of a power struggle between the two groups, and must choose a side in order to survive.
The film features an ensemble cast including Leonardo DiCaprio as Amsterdam, Daniel Day-Lewis as Bill the Butcher, Cameron Diaz as Jenny Everdeane
