Synopsis/Plot
Gandhi is a 1982 British-Indian epic historical drama film based on the life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the leader of India’s non-violent, non-cooperative independence movement against the United Kingdom’s rule of the country during the 20th century. Directed and co-written by Richard Attenborough, the film stars Ben Kingsley as Gandhi, alongside Candice Bergen, Edward Fox, John Gielgud, Trevor Howard, John Mills, Martin Sheen, and Rohini Hattangadi.
The film begins with Gandhi’s assassination in 1948, and then flashes back to his early life in South Africa, where he is a lawyer and civil rights activist. He returns to India and leads a successful non-violent protest against the oppressive British rule. He then embarks on a nationwide campaign of non-violent resistance and civil disobedience, urging his countrymen to stand up to the British authorities. Through his leadership, he is able to bring about the independence of India from the British Empire.
The film follows Gandhi’s journey through a tumultuous period in Indian history, and explores his philosophy of non-violence and its impact on a nation. It also examines his relationship with his wife
