Synopsis – What to Expect from “Game Change”
Game Change is a 2012 HBO television movie based on the 2008 United States presidential election. The film follows the story of Republican nominee Senator John McCain (Ed Harris) and his running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin (Julianne Moore).
The film begins with Senator John McCain’s campaign for the 2008 presidential election. With his campaign in trouble, McCain’s advisors suggest that he choose a running mate that will help him win the election. They decide on Sarah Palin, a relatively unknown governor from Alaska.
At first, Palin’s selection is seen as a success, as she energizes the base and helps McCain gain in the polls. However, as the campaign progresses, Palin’s inexperience and lack of knowledge become more and more apparent. Her gaffes and missteps on the campaign trail become more and more frequent, and her lack of understanding of foreign policy and the economy become more and more obvious.
McCain’s advisors are increasingly concerned about Palin’s performance, but McCain is unwilling to replace her. He believes that she is the best choice for the job and that she is the only one who can help him win the election.
The film follows the ups and downs of the campaign, culminating in the election night, when McCain and Palin are ultimately defeated. The film ends with McCain reflecting on the election and the choice he made in selecting Palin as his running mate.
