Synopsis/Plot
Fried Green Tomatoes is a 1991 drama film based on the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café by Fannie Flagg. The film follows the story of two women, Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) and Ninny Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy), and their friendship as Evelyn finds solace in Ninny’s stories about Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth Jamison (Mary-Louise Parker).
The film begins with Evelyn, a middle-aged, unhappy housewife, visiting her husband’s elderly aunt, Ninny, in a nursing home. Ninny is a lively storyteller and tells Evelyn the story of Idgie and Ruth, two spirited women living in rural Whistle Stop, Alabama in the 1920s. Idgie and Ruth own and operate the Whistle Stop Café, a popular local eatery, and become close friends despite their differences. Idgie is a tomboyish, carefree rebel while Ruth is a more traditional woman who is struggling with her marriage to a cruel, abusive husband.
The film follows the two women’s lives as Idgie and Ruth’s friendship deepens and they face a variety of challenges
