Synopsis/Plot
Free Willy is a 1993 family drama film directed by Simon Wincer about an orphaned boy named Jesse who befriends a captive Orca whale named Willy. Jesse, a troubled and misunderstood youth, has been sent to a juvenile detention center for stealing a car. While there, he meets a kindly old man who works at the center and takes an interest in Jesse’s life. Jesse is eventually allowed to work at the local aquarium, where he meets Willy, a young Orca whale who has been captured and put in captivity. Jesse and Willy form an unlikely bond, and Jesse soon realizes that Willy is being mistreated and needs to be set free. With the help of his newfound friends and a marine biologist, JesseJesse comes up with a plan to free Willy by using a large floating device to guide him through a narrow channel leading to the open ocean. Despite the danger, Jesse and his friends set out to free Willy from captivity. With the help of the marine biologist, they manage to successfully guide Willy out to freedom. The film ends with Jesse and his friends watching Willy swim out to the open ocean, free at last. As the credits roll, we hear Jesse’s voice narrating that “Willy is free, and that’s what matters.”
