Freaks is a 1932 American horror drama film directed and produced by Tod Browning and released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The original version of the film was considered too shocking to be released, and the studio cut out a third of its running time before releasing it.
The film tells the story of a circus sideshow that is populated by a variety of physically deformed and otherwise abnormal performers. Among them is Hans, a midget who falls in love with a trapeze artist named Cleopatra. When Cleopatra and her strongman boyfriend, Hercules, plot to take advantage of Hans and his inheritance, the other sideshow performers come together to protect him.
The film features a cast ofreal-life carnival performers, including Daisy and Violet Hilton, who were conjoined twins, and the human torso Prince Randian, who could not move any of his limbs. The film also features Harry Earles as Hans and Wallace Ford as Phroso, the sideshow’s clown. Freaks was controversial upon its release, and it was banned in many countries, including the United Kingdom, for decades. It is now considered a cult classic and is often cited as an influence on later horror films.
