Synopsis – What to Expect from “Flirting with Disaster”
Flirting with Disaster is a 1996 American comedy-drama film directed by David O. Russell and starring Ben Stiller, Patricia Arquette, Téa Leoni, Mary Tyler Moore, George Segal, and Alan Alda.
The story follows Mel Coplin (Stiller), a young man in his late twenties who is in search of his biological parents. Mel is married to Nancy (Arquette), a woman he loves deeply, but he is troubled by the fact that he was adopted as a child and is unsure of his true identity.
Mel and Nancy decide to hire a private detective, Tony (Alda), to help them locate Mel’s biological parents. Tony is able to locate Mel’s mother, Tina (Moore), who is living in San Diego. Mel and Nancy travel to San Diego to meet Tina, and they are surprised to find out that she is a hippie living in a commune.
Meanwhile, Tony continues to search for Mel’s father and discovers that Mel’s father is actually a man named Richard Schlichting (Segal). Richard is a successful businessman living in Washington D.C. with his wife Mary (Leoni).
