Synopsis/Plot
Flatliners is a 1990 science fiction psychological horror film directed by Joel Schumacher. It stars Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt.
The story follows five medical students who experiment on “near death” experiences that involve past tragedies until the dark consequences begin to jeopardize their lives. The film follows the students as they plunge headfirst into the depths of their own minds, confronting their personal demons and facing their own mortality.
The students, led by Nelson Wright (Kiefer Sutherland), conduct a series of experiments in which they stop their hearts for short periods of time to experience a “near death” experience. After each experiment, the students report having strange visions and memories of their past. As they continue to experiment, the visions become more vivid and the group begins to experience terrifying consequences as a result of their actions.
The students soon discover that the consequences of their actions are far more serious than they had anticipated and that they must confront their fears before it’s too late. The film is a thrilling exploration of morality and mortality, and the consequences of pushing the boundaries of life and death.
