Synopsis/Plot
Flatliners is a 1990 psychological horror film directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin, and Oliver Platt. The film follows five medical students who attempt to explore the boundaries of life and death by flatlining (stopping their hearts for a brief period of time) and then being revived.
The group of medical students, Nelson (Kiefer Sutherland), Rachel (Julia Roberts), Joe (Kevin Bacon), David (William Baldwin), and Randy (Oliver Platt), are all driven by their curiosity to explore the afterlife and to find out what lies beyond death. They attempt to do this by flatlining – stopping their hearts for a few minutes and then being revived by their peers.
At first, the experience seems to be a success, with each of them having a vision of something they consider to be a glimpse of the afterlife. However, they soon realise that the visions are actually repressed memories from their past, which they must confront in order to move on. As they do, they each experience a different kind of terror, as they are haunted by the ghosts of their pasts.
The group must now deal with the consequences
