Synopsis – What to Expect from “Five Easy Pieces”
Five Easy Pieces follows Bobby Dupea, a drifter and former classical pianist, as he moves from job to job working in oil fields and as a mechanic. Bobby is estranged from his wealthy family and has chosen to live a simple life.
When Bobby learns his father is dying, he reluctantly returns to his family’s Washington state home. Upon his arrival, he finds his father is in a coma and his family is distant and unfamiliar. Bobby’s sister Carol is the only one who seems to understand him.
Bobby soon discovers that his family is in financial trouble and his father’s land is being sold to a developer. Bobby’s sister, Catherine, attempts to persuade Bobby to use his classical music training to help the family out of their financial troubles. Bobby refuses, and instead attempts to find a way to save the land.
Bobby’s attempts to save the land are met with resistance from his family and the developer. Bobby is eventually able to negotiate a deal with the developer, but his family is still skeptical.
Meanwhile, Bobby begins a romantic relationship with a waitress, Rayette. Rayette is desperate to escape her mundane life and Bobby’s family is not fond of her. Despite their disapproval, Bobby and Rayette continue to grow closer.
The family eventually learns to accept Bobby and Rayette and they are welcomed back into the family. Bobby finds a way to save the land and his family is able to keep their home.
