Synopsis/Plot
First Reformed is a 2018 drama film written and directed by Paul Schrader. The film stars Ethan Hawke as Reverend Ernst Toller, a former military chaplain who is now the pastor of a small church in upstate New York. Toller is struggling with his own faith and his place in the world, as well as the increasing environmental issues plaguing the world.
When Mary, a pregnant parishioner, comes to Toller for help, he is inspired to take action. He begins to research the environmental damage caused by a nearby chemical plant, and his investigation leads him to a radical environmental activist group. As he gets more involved in the environmental movement, Toller finds himself questioning his faith and his place in the world.
Meanwhile, Toller’s health is deteriorating, and his relationship with Mary and her husband Michael is strained. As he continues to struggle with his faith and his place in the world, Toller begins to question his past and his own sense of purpose.
