Synopsis – What to Expect from “First Match”
First Match is a 2018 drama film directed by Olivia Newman. The film tells the story of Monique, a 16-year-old from Brooklyn who is struggling to find her place in the world. Desperate to prove herself, Monique joins the boys’ wrestling team at her high school and must fight for her place on the team and in the world.
The film begins with Monique’s introduction to the world of wrestling. Despite her initial reservations, she quickly finds that she loves the sport and is determined to prove her worth to the team. She works hard to make the team and eventually earns the respect of her teammates.
However, Monique quickly finds that the world of competitive wrestling is much different than the world she is used to. Despite her successes on the mat, she is still met with discrimination and sexism from her peers and coaches. She must fight to be taken seriously and to prove her worth as a wrestler.
Meanwhile, Monique is also dealing with the pressures of her home life. Her father is in and out of jail, her mother is struggling to make ends meet, and Monique is trying to take care of her younger brother and sister. She must find a way to balance her responsibilities at home with her responsibilities on the wrestling team.
