Synopsis – What to Expect from “Finding Altamira”
Finding Altamira is a 2016 Spanish drama film directed by Hugh Hudson. It tells the story of Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, a 19th-century Spanish archaeologist who discovers the Paleolithic cave paintings of Altamira.
The film takes place in the late 19th century in the small Spanish town of Santillana del Mar. Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola (Antonio Banderas) is a local landowner and amateur archaeologist who is fascinated by the nearby caves of Altamira. He takes his daughter Maria (Allegra Allen) and her friend Marcelino (Alejandro Furth) on an expedition to explore the caves.
When they arrive, Marcelino and his daughter are amazed to discover that the caves are filled with stunning Paleolithic paintings of bison, horses, and other animals. Marcelino is convinced that the paintings are ancient and that they must be the work of an unknown civilization. He publishes his findings in a book, but is met with disbelief and ridicule from the scientific community.
Marcelino is determined to prove his theory and embarks on a quest to gain recognition for his discovery. Along the way, he encounters opposition from the Church, the scientific community, and his own family. He is also forced to confront his own doubts and fears as he struggles to gain acceptance for his revolutionary theory.
