Synopsis/Plot
Fences is a powerful and emotional drama directed by Denzel Washington and starring him and Viola Davis. The movie is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by August Wilson.
The movie is set in 1950s Pittsburgh and follows the life of Troy Maxson (Washington), a former Negro League baseball player, and his family. Troy works as a garbage collector and is struggling to provide for his wife Rose (Davis) and their two sons. He is bitter about the racism he has experienced in his life and is unable to move on from the past.
Troy’s relationship with his son Cory (Jovan Adepo) is strained as Cory dreams of playing college football and Troy refuses to accept his son’s ambitionsTroy’s relationship with his other son, Lyons (Russell Hornsby) is also strained as Lyons is a musician who is trying to make it in the music industry. Troy is jealous of Lyons and the attention he gives him. As tensions between Troy and his family mount, Troy builds a fence around his house in an attempt to keep everyone out.
The movie follows Troy and his family as they grapple with the issues of racism, family dynamics, and the difficulty of letting go of the past. The movie is a powerful exploration of the universal themes of family, love, and forgiveness.
