Synopsis – What to Expect from “Fatherland”
Fatherland is a 1994 American drama film directed by Ken Loach and starring German actor Bruno Ganz. The film follows a German father, Walter (Ganz), who is trying to reconnect with his estranged son, whom he has not seen in years.
The film begins with Walter arriving in Germany from the United States, where he has been living for many years. He is welcomed by his son, Martin (Thomas Kretschmann), who is now a successful businessman. As the two get reacquainted, Walter begins to learn more about his son’s life, including his struggles with his own father, whom he has not spoken to in years.
As Walter and Martin spend more time together, Walter begins to understand the difficulties of his son’s life, and begins to find common ground with him. He also meets a woman, Sophie (Barbara Auer), who is also estranged from her family. The two develop a friendship and Walter begins to open up to her.
At the same time, Walter also begins to explore his own past, visiting places he knew as a child and meeting people who knew him before he left for the United States. He also visits the grave of his late wife, whom he had left behind when he left Germany.
As Walter and Martin’s relationship begins to improve, Walter’s past comes back to haunt him when he discovers that his son is involved in a shady business deal. Walter must now decide whether to confront
