Synopsis – What to Expect from “Fast Food Nation”
Fast Food Nation is a 2006 American comedy-drama film directed by Richard Linklater. The film follows the story of a young man, Don Anderson (Greg Kinnear) who is the executive vice president of marketing for a fast food chain called Mickey’s. Don is sent to investigate a meatpacking plant in Colorado that supplies the beef for the chain’s hamburgers.
The film follows Don as he explores the plant and the surrounding town, meeting the various characters who work and live there. He meets the plant’s manager, Rudy Martin (Bruce Willis), a gruff but fair-minded man who is trying to run the plant as best he can. Don also meets Amber (Ashley Johnson) and Cindy (Patricia Arquette), two teenage girls who work at the plant, as well as a variety of other characters.
Don soon discovers that the plant is rife with unsanitary and unsafe conditions, and he begins to investigate further. He learns of the various health risks posed by the plant, including the use of illegal and dangerous chemicals in the meat, and the exploitation of the workers who are paid little and have no benefits.
As Don continues his investigation, he begins to realize the far-reaching implications of the plant’s practices, and the dangers posed to the entire fast food industry. He also begins to understand the consequences of his own role in the industry, and the responsibility he has to do something about it.
