Synopsis – What to Expect from “FairyTale: A True Story”
FairyTale: A True Story is a 1997 fantasy film directed by Charles Sturridge and starring Harvey Keitel, Peter O’Toole, and Paul McGann. The film is based on a true story about two young girls who claim to have seen fairies in the English countryside during the early part of the 20th century.
The story follows two young cousins, Frances Griffiths (Elizabeth Earl) and Elsie Wright (Florence Hoath), who live in the small village of Cottingley in Yorkshire, England. One day, while playing outdoors, the girls claim to have seen and photographed a group of fairies. Despite their parents’ skepticism, the girls maintain their story and eventually gain the attention of Arthur Conan Doyle (Harvey Keitel), the famous author of the Sherlock Holmes stories. Doyle believes the girls and takes an interest in their story, enlisting the help of two photographers, Edward Lachman (Peter O’Toole) and Harold Snelling (Paul McGann), to help prove their story.
The photographers take pictures of the girls with the fairies and the photos become a sensation, sparking debate amongst the public. However, their story is met with skepticism from the scientific community, who insist the pictures are a hoax. Despite the criticism, Doyle continues to defend the girls and their story and eventually, the girls are vindicated when it is revealed that the photos are genuine.
