Synopsis – What to Expect from “Ethel & Ernest”
Ethel & Ernest is a 2016 animated feature film based on the 1998 graphic novel of the same name by Raymond Briggs. It tells the story of the lifelong relationship between Ethel and Ernest, two ordinary Londoners living through extraordinary events of the 20th century.
The film begins in the late 1920s, when Ethel and Ernest meet and fall in love. They soon marry and have a son, Raymond, who grows up to become a successful cartoonist.
As the years pass, the couple weather the Great Depression, World War II, and the post-war years. Through it all, their love for each other and for their son remains strong.
The film follows the couple through their joys and sorrows, as they face the changing times and technology of the 20th century. Along the way, they experience the birth of the National Health Service, the rise of television, and the advent of the computer age.
The film culminates in Ernest’s death in 1971, and Ethel’s in 1982. As they look back on their lives, their love for each other and for Raymond remains strong.
Ethel & Ernest is a heartfelt and touching story about the power of love and the importance of family. It is a story of ordinary people living through extraordinary times, and a reminder that life is precious and should be cherished.
