Synopsis/Plot
Escape from New York is a 1981 action-adventure film directed by John Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, an ex-soldier turned convict who is sent to rescue the President of the United States from a crime-ridden New York City in the near future. The film takes place in 1997, when the island of Manhattan has been turned into a maximum security prison. When the President’s plane is hijacked and crashes in the city, Snake is recruited by the US government to rescue him.
Snake is given 24 hours to complete the mission, and is fitted with an explosive collar that will detonate if he fails to return in time. He is joined by a female criminal, Maggie (Adrienne Barbeau), who helps him navigate the dangerous streets of New York. During his mission, Snake encounters a variety of characters, including the Duke of New York (Isaac Hayes), a crime lord who controls the city, and Cabbie (Ernest Borgnine), an old war veteran who helps Snake in his mission.
