Synopsis – What to Expect from “Equus”
Equus is a 1977 British-American drama film directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Peter Shaffer, based on his play of the same name. The film stars Richard Burton, Peter Firth, Colin Blakely, Joan Plowright, Eileen Atkins, and Jenny Agutter.
The film tells the story of Dr. Martin Dysart (Burton), a psychiatrist who is tasked with treating a troubled young man named Alan Strang (Firth). Alan has been admitted to a psychiatric hospital after blinding six horses with a metal spike. As Dr. Dysart attempts to uncover the source of Alan’s violence, he is forced to confront his own feelings of alienation and emptiness.
At the same time, Alan’s parents (Blakely and Plowright) struggle to come to terms with their son’s actions and the possibility that he may be mentally ill. As the story progresses, Dr. Dysart and Alan’s parents come to understand the complex psychological motivations behind Alan’s behavior.
The film culminates with a powerful confrontation between Dr. Dysart and Alan, in which the two men come to terms with their respective feelings of emptiness and alienation. Ultimately, Alan is able to find peace and acceptance, and Dr. Dysart is able to move on with his life.
