Synopsis – What to Expect from “England Is Mine”
England Is Mine is a 2017 British biographical drama film directed by Mark Gill and written by Gill and William Thacker. The film stars Jack Lowden as Steven Morrissey, the lead singer of the influential 1980s band The Smiths.
The film follows Morrissey’s journey from a shy, introverted young man in Manchester to an outspoken, iconic singer-songwriter. It chronicles Morrissey’s early life, from his childhood struggles with shyness and loneliness to his teenage years as a music obsessive, and his eventual rise to fame.
The film opens with an introverted Morrissey (Jack Lowden) struggling to fit in at school and in his family. He’s a loner, a dreamer, and a misfit. He spends his days writing poetry and obsessing over music, dreaming of a life beyond the mundane existence of his small-town Manchester.
Morrissey eventually finds solace in a group of like-minded individuals who share his passion for music. He meets a kindred spirit in Linder Sterling (Jessica Brown Findlay) and the two form a close friendship. He also finds a mentor in local music producer and record store owner Joe Moss (Peter McDonald). With their help, Morrissey begins to build a career in music, writing and recording demo tapes and performing at local venues.
