Synopsis/Plot
Empire of the Sun is a 1987 film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on J.G. Ballard’s autobiographical novel of the same name. The film follows the story of young Jim Graham (Christian Bale) as he navigates the Japanese occupation of Shanghai during World War II.
The film begins with Jim and his family living a comfortable life in Shanghai. But when the Japanese invade, Jim is separated from his parents and must fend for himself. He finds refuge in a Japanese internment camp, where he meets an American prisoner of war, Basie (John Malkovich). Jim and Basie form a strong bond, and Basie helps Jim survive the rigors of the camp.
Meanwhile, Jim’s parents are struggling to get by in a city under siege. Jim’s father, a British businessman, is arrested and taken away, leaving his mother to fend for herself. Despite the hardships, Jim’s mother manages to make a life for herself and her son.
As the war progresses, Jim grows up in the camp, learning to survive on his own. He also begins to develop a fascination with Japanese culture, and even adopts a Japanese identity. He begins to believe that he is the son of
