Synopsis – What to Expect from “Elmer Gantry”
Elmer Gantry is a 1960 American drama film directed by Richard Brooks and starring Burt Lancaster, Jean Simmons, Arthur Kennedy, and Shirley Jones. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Sinclair Lewis.
The movie follows Elmer Gantry (Burt Lancaster), a former con man and alcoholic who has found a new life as a traveling salesman. He meets a young, idealistic preacher named Sharon Falconer (Jean Simmons) who is trying to spread the word of God through her own revival meetings. Elmer is taken with her passion and enthusiasm and decides to join her cause.
Elmer and Sharon travel around the country, preaching and holding revival meetings. As they do, Elmer begins to gain fame and notoriety, and he soon becomes a celebrity in the religious community. However, Elmer’s past catches up with him and he must face the consequences of his actions.
At the same time, Sharon’s ministry begins to suffer as her faith is tested and she is forced to confront her own doubts and fears. Elmer must decide whether to continue to support Sharon and her ministry or to abandon her and return to his old ways.
The film follows Elmer and Sharon as they struggle to keep their faith and their ministry alive in the face of adversity. In the end, Elmer must decide whether to continue to follow the path of righteousness or to succumb to the temptations of his former life.
