Synopsis/Plot
Electric Dreams is a 1984 science fiction romantic comedy-drama directed by Steve Barron and starring Lenny von Dohlen, Virginia Madsen, and Maxwell Caulfield. The film follows the story of Miles Harding (von Dohlen), a computer programmer who purchases a state-of-the-art home computer, which he names Edgar (voiced by Bud Cort). After Miles’ girlfriend, Madeline (Madsen), moves out, he discovers that Edgar is capable of independent thought and has developed feelings for him.
Miles must then learn to accept Edgar as a friend and confidant, while also trying to win back Madeline. Meanwhile, Edgar must deal with the fact that he is nothing more than a machine, and must learn to accept his limited capabilities. As their relationship grows, Miles and Edgar find themselves learning from each other and forming an unlikely bond.
The film is set in the near future and features a variety of cutting-edge computer technologies, including voice recognition software, computer-generated animation, and artificial intelligence.
