Synopsis – What to Expect from “Election”
Election is a 1999 American black comedy film directed by Alexander Payne and written by Payne and Jim Taylor, based on the 1998 novel of the same name by Tom Perrotta. The film stars Matthew Broderick as a high school teacher who finds himself in a political battle against a popular and ambitious student, played by Reese Witherspoon.
The movie follows the story of Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick), a high school teacher in suburban Omaha, Nebraska. He is highly respected by his students and is a popular teacher among them. He is also the faculty advisor for the school’s student council elections.
When Jim meets Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon), a popular and ambitious student, he sees her as a threat to the democratic process he is trying to teach his students. He decides to sabotage her campaign and get her kicked out of school. He enlists the help of his fellow teachers and students to do so.
The movie follows the story of the election as Jim and Tracy battle it out for the student council president position. Jim’s sabotage of Tracy’s campaign backfires and he finds himself in the middle of a political battle. He must face the consequences of his actions and learn the importance of the democratic process.
