Synopsis – What to Expect from “Eighth Grade”
Eighth Grade is a coming-of-age drama that follows Kayla, a thirteen-year-old girl, as she navigates the tumultuous waters of her last week of middle school.
The film opens with Kayla’s first day of eighth grade. She is awkward, shy, and struggling to make friends. She records vlogs in which she offers advice to her peers, although she is often too shy to apply it to her own life. As the week progresses, Kayla finds it increasingly difficult to fit in, and her doubts about her own worth are compounded by the cruel behavior of her peers.
When Kayla’s father takes her to a pool party, she is embarrassed by her own inexperience and lack of confidence. She is further humiliated when a popular girl posts a video of her embarrassing moment online. After the party, Kayla’s father takes her to a nearby lake, where they talk about her experiences at school.
On the last day of school, Kayla’s teacher gives her a heartfelt goodbye speech that encourages her to stay true to herself. Kayla is inspired by the speech, and decides to finally stand up for herself at the school’s end-of-year dance.
At the dance, Kayla is initially too scared to dance, but eventually she finds the courage to take the floor. She is soon surrounded by her peers, who are all dancing and having a good time. Kayla finally feels accepted
