Synopsis – What to Expect from “Effie Gray”
Effie Gray is a 2014 romantic drama film based on the true story of Effie Gray, a young woman in Victorian England who was married to the renowned art critic John Ruskin. The film follows Effie as she struggles to find a voice to express her innermost feelings and to escape the oppressive marriage she finds herself in.
The film opens with Effie Gray (Dakota Fanning) as a young woman living in Victorian England, married to the renowned art critic John Ruskin (Greg Wise). Despite their social standing, Effie is not happy in her marriage to John, who is distant and neglectful. She finds solace in her friendship with the Pre-Raphaelite painter John Everett Millais (Tom Sturridge), who is commissioned to paint her portrait. Through their conversations, Effie begins to realize that her feelings for John Everett are more than just friendship.
Meanwhile, John Ruskin’s cousin, the art historian Lady Elizabeth Eastlake (Emma Thompson), begins to suspect that something is amiss in the marriage. She encourages Effie to explore her feelings and to find a way to express them.
Effie ultimately decides to take a stand against her husband and file for an annulment. Despite John Ruskin’s attempts to block her, she successfully achieves her goal and is granted a divorce. The film ends with Effie and John Everett happily married, and Effie reclaiming her independence.
