Synopsis/Plot
Easy Rider is a 1969 American road movie written by Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, and Terry Southern, produced by Fonda and directed by Hopper. The film tells the story of two bikers, Wyatt (Fonda) and Billy (Hopper), who travel through the American Southwest and South with the aim of achieving freedom. The pair set off from Los Angeles on their choppers, loaded with cash from a drug deal, and make their way to New Orleans in time for Mardi Gras. Along the way they encounter a variety of colorful characters, including a drunken lawyer (Jack Nicholson) and a hitchhiking hippie (Antonio Mendoza). As they travel, they are met with hostility and suspicion from the people they encounter, and are ultimately denied the freedom they seek.
The film is widely considered to be a defining work of the New Hollywood era, and is noted for its celebration of the counterculture of the 1960s. Its success helped spark the New Hollywood movement of the 1970s, and its influence can be seen in the work of a number of filmmakers, including George Lucas and Martin Scorsese.
