Synopsis – What to Expect from “Drop Dead Fred”
Drop Dead Fred is a 1991 fantasy-comedy film directed by Ate de Jong and starring Rik Mayall, Phoebe Cates, and Marsha Mason.
The film follows the story of Elizabeth “Lizzie” Cronin (Phoebe Cates), a young woman who is struggling to cope with the pressures of adulthood. After her marriage to Charles (Tim Matheson) fails, she returns to her childhood home and is reunited with her imaginary friend from childhood, Drop Dead Fred (Rik Mayall).
When Lizzie discovers that Fred is real and not just a figment of her imagination, she is initially shocked and confused. But as Fred helps her to confront her problems and stand up for herself, she begins to realize that she can be her own person and live her own life.
The film follows Lizzie and Fred as they embark on a series of wild adventures and misadventures, from crashing Charles’ wedding to helping Lizzie stand up to her domineering mother (Marsha Mason). Along the way, they encounter a variety of colorful characters, such as a gruff old woman (Liz Smith) and a mysterious fortuneteller (Caroline Quentin).
In the end, Lizzie and Fred must face off against a powerful force that threatens to separate them forever. Through their friendship, Lizzie discovers the courage to take control of her life and stand up for herself.
