Synopsis – What to Expect from “Dragonwyck”
Dragonwyck is a 1946 drama film directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and starring Gene Tierney, Walter Huston, and Vincent Price.
The movie is set in the 1840s and tells the story of Miranda Wells (Gene Tierney), a young and naive farm girl from Connecticut. She is invited by her wealthy distant cousin, Nicholas Van Ryn (Vincent Price), to come and live with him at his estate called Dragonwyck. Miranda is excited to leave her small town and experience a life of luxury, but quickly discovers that life at Dragonwyck is not what she had expected.
Nicholas is a strange and mysterious man who rules over his estate with an iron fist. He is obsessed with the idea of the divine right of kings and is determined to keep his estate intact, even if it means manipulating and controlling those around him. Miranda soon finds herself in a difficult situation, as she is caught between her loyalty to her family and her growing attraction to Nicholas.
At the same time, Nicholas’ wife Johanna (Anne Revere) begins to suspect that something is going on between her husband and Miranda. As the tension between the three characters builds, Miranda must make a difficult decision about her future and the fate of Dragonwyck.
