Synopsis/Plot
Dragnet is a 1987 American buddy cop comedy film starring Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks. Directed by Tom Mankiewicz, the film is based on the 1950s television series of the same name.
The story follows LAPD Sergeant Joe Friday (Aykroyd) and his partner, Detective Pep Streebek (Hanks), as they investigate a series of bizarre crimes. The pair are first called in to investigate a series of thefts of rare religious artifacts, which leads them to a mysterious cult led by Reverend Jonathan Whirley (Christopher Plummer). As the investigation deepens, Friday and Streebek discover that the cult is actually a front for a drug smuggling operation.
The pair must use their wits and street smarts to uncover the truth and bring the criminals to justice. Along the way, they must contend with a variety of colorful characters, including a flamboyant TV news reporter (Alexandra Paul), a pair of bumbling detectives (Dabney Coleman and Harry Morgan), and a tough-talking mob boss (Joe Pantoliano).
The film is a lighthearted homage to the classic TV series, featuring a number of in-jokes and references.
