Synopsis/Plot
Down Periscope is a 1996 military comedy directed by David S. Ward and starring Kelsey Grammer, Lauren Holly, and Rob Schneider. The film follows the misadventures of Lt. Commander Thomas Dodge (Grammer), a US Navy Submarine Officer who is assigned to take command of the USS Stingray, a decommissioned diesel-powered submarine. Dodge and his rag-tag crew of misfits embark on a series of missions designed to test their skills and prove their worth to the Navy. Along the way, they must face the formidable nuclear-powered USS Orlando, a submarine captained by the arrogant Commander Frank Ramsey (Bruce Dern).
The film is a lighthearted take on the military, with plenty of laughs and some surprisingly tense moments. Dodge and his crew must overcome their own shortcomings and lack of experience, as well as the overwhelming power of the Orlando, in order to prove themselves.
