Synopsis – What to Expect from “Down by Law”
Down by Law is a 1986 black-and-white comedy-drama directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Tom Waits, John Lurie, and Roberto Benigni. The film follows the misadventures of three men who find themselves in a Louisiana jail after being wrongfully arrested.
Jack (Tom Waits) is a down-on-his-luck pimp who is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Zack (John Lurie) is a DJ who is arrested for a crime he did not commit either. And Roberto (Roberto Benigni) is an Italian tourist who speaks very little English and is also arrested for a crime he did not commit.
The three men are thrown together in a jail cell and become friends. Despite their differences, they form an unlikely bond. As they wait for their trial, they share stories and help each other through the boredom.
Eventually, the trio come up with a plan to escape. With the help of a sympathetic guard, they break out of the prison and make their way to the bayou. Along the way, they encounter a variety of colorful characters, including a blind blues singer, a voodoo priestess, and a mysterious old woman.
The three men eventually make it to the bayou, where they find a boat and set sail for freedom. However, their escape is not without its risks, as the authorities are hot on their trail.
