Synopsis/Plot
Dolores Claiborne is a 1995 psychological thriller drama film based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. Directed by Taylor Hackford and starring Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Christopher Plummer, the film follows the story of Dolores Claiborne, an elderly woman living in rural Maine who is accused of murdering her wealthy employer.
The film opens with the death of Dolores’ long-time employer, Vera Donovan, who has been suffering from a terminal illness. As the police investigate her death, Dolores is suspected of killing her, but she denies the accusations. Meanwhile, her estranged daughter, Selena, returns to Maine after a long absence to take care of her mother.
The story then flashes back to Dolores’ past, revealing the events that led up to Vera’s death. It is revealed that Dolores’ husband, Joe St. George, had been physically and emotionally abusive to her, and she had been forced to cover up his death 20 years prior. As a result, Dolores had been living in poverty and struggling to make ends meet.
