Synopsis/Plot
Dog Day Afternoon is a 1975 American crime drama film directed by Sidney Lumet and written by Frank Pierson. The film stars Al Pacino, John Cazale, Charles Durning, and Chris Sarandon.
The film is based on a true story that occurred in 1972, when a man named John Wojtowicz attempted to rob a bank in order to pay for his male lover’s sex reassignment surgery. The film follows Wojtowicz, portrayed by Pacino, and his friend Salvatore Naturale, portrayed by Cazale, as they attempt to rob a Chase Manhattan bank branch on August 22, 1972.
The film follows the events of the robbery as they unfold, as well as the media circus that surrounds the event. As the robbery progresses, the police arrive and the robbers find themselves in an increasingly desperate situation. The film also examines the relationship between the robbers and the police, as well as the relationship between Wojtowicz and his lover.
