He arrives to find a young widow, Madge Arwell, and her two children, Lily and Cyril. Madge is struggling to keep her family together in the face of an impending financial crisis.
The Doctor offers to take the family away on a journey to a secret, magical place for Christmas. The family is transported to a mysterious forest and soon discovers that it is the home of a mysterious alien race called the Forest of Cheem.
The Doctor and the family soon discover that the Forest of Cheem is in danger of being destroyed by an alien race called the Sontarans. The Doctor and the family must join forces with the Forest of Cheem to save it from destruction. Along the way, they discover a mysterious wardrobe that holds the key to saving the forest.
