Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor is a 2013 British science fiction television special written by Steven Moffat and directed by Nick Hurran. It was broadcast on BBC One on 23 November 2013, in celebration of the programme’s 50th anniversary. It is the 800th episode of the long-running science fiction series Doctor Who.
The special features the Tenth Doctor (David Tennant) and the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) teaming up with the War Doctor (John Hurt) to save Gallifrey from destruction. As the Doctor’s past incarnations unite, they must battle an ancient force that threatens the existence of the entire universe.
The story begins with the Eleventh Doctor, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) and their companion, Queen Elizabeth I (Joanna Page) travelling to the planet of Trenzalore in search of the Doctor’s lost home, Gallifrey. There, they discover that the planet is under siege by the Daleks, who are trying to break through a force field that protects the planet. The Doctor and his companions must find a way to stop the Daleks and save Gallifrey.
