Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood is a 2002 American comedy-drama film based on Rebecca Wells’ novel of the same name. The film stars Sandra Bullock, Ellen Burstyn, Fionnula Flanagan, James Garner, Ashley Judd, and Maggie Smith.
The film follows Siddalee Walker (Bullock), a successful theater director living in New York City. She has a strained relationship with her mother Vivi (Burstyn), who constantly criticizes her for her lifestyle choices. When Vivi is interviewed for a magazine article, she makes some disparaging remarks about Sidda’s upbringing, which causes Sidda to sever all contact with her.
When Vivi suffers a nervous breakdown, the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Vivi’s childhood friends, travel from Louisiana to New York to reunite the mother and daughter. Sidda is initially resistant to the Ya-Yas, but gradually warms up to them. With the help of the Ya-Yas, Sidda learns to forgive her mother and accept her for who she is.
The Ya-Yas also tell Sidda the story of her mother’s past, including her tumultuous relationship with her own mother. Sidda finally begins to understand why Vivi is the way she is, and the two reconcile.
